What does the Auto and Manual mean on a Film Camera Lens?

I bought a Pentax SP 500 recently and it comes with a 55mm lens. I was wondering what the Auto and Manual on the lens does? I notice that when In manual and I have the Exposure meter turned on the aperature ring works fine, but when exposure meter is off, it makes no difference.
